We head into our second and final weekend of shows tonight and are excited to bring you another incredible weekend of drama, as we bring The Trojan Women back for its final foray on the stage over the next two nights
Everyone is ready to bring this outstanding adaptation of Euripides' tragedy back to the stage, but there is one element of the stage that, if you have seen the show, you might have noticed - the stunning backdrop!
The extraordinary talents of the amazing Sally Curry have come into play here, with our 'Troy' backdrop - that Sally designed & handpainted singlehandedly. It is a stunning piece of visual artwork and took copious amounts of hours for Sally to design, based off the story & the adaptation, and then to handpaint it! The backdrop stretches across the entire stage area and is an extraordinary addition to the set of this production
We are enamored by the unbelievable talents of Sally and can't thank her enough for this amazing piece of work that completes our set perfectly!
If you haven't see this piece of art already, be sure to some and see The Trojan Women yourself and see for yourself how stunning the backdrop is - and with just TWO SHOWS remaining, be sure to grab your tickets now!
After an incredibly successful opening weekend, we are about to head into our final TWO SHOWS this weekend - THIS Friday (19th) & Sat (20th) @ 8pm
Our creatives are gearing up for the weekend, our cast is preparing to head back on stage & audiences are booking, but we are very aware that none of this would be possible without the incredible work of our Production team!
The Production team, which consists of everything from backstage, front of house, sound, lighting, stage management, production management, direction, props & more - are those incredible people that make everything work, that ensure everything goes according to plan, that ensure the play gets on the stage with all the bells & whistles
We couldn't do what we do, to the quality we do it, without our incredible Production team - they are truly amazing and really are the glue that holds everything together
We want to introduce you to these amazing humans (check-out the photo below) and say THANK YOU for all your hard work in ensuring The Trojan Women makes it to the space time & time again and looks so darn good doing it! You are the best!
Come and see The Trojan Women yourself and see what we mean when we say our Prod team are without a doubt the best thing since sliced bread (or Greek wine) - and with just TWO SHOWS remaining, be sure to grab your tickets now!
We are thrilled you all got to meet our cast prior to them hitting the stage for Opening weekend last weekend, however, now we would like to introduce you to some of our creatives, who over the last few months have been working hard behind the scenes to make things look absolutely incredible.
The first of our creatives we'd like to introduce you to is....
MELANIE THOMAS Role: Co-Costume Designer & Costume Maker/CoOrdinator
* Where did you start when you were looking at inspiration for this production?
I always start with an inspiration from the era (and quite often widely beyond) the play is in. I take from photos, film, music, scenery - basically anything that speaks to me about links with the play. Pinterest is my best friend, but I’m also loving Milanote to reign my ideas in and create the ‘red threads’ between ideas so they dramaturgically speak to one another. I also go to fabric stores to look for colour matching patterns, always keeping in mind the intention behind the production and character interpretation.
* What has been the most difficult part of your job on this production?
The most difficult job in this production was the sheer manpower and hours that have gone into making bespoke costumes for all the women and finding thematically correct suits for the men. Luckily I had the brilliant Brittany Baldwin using her thrifting expertise with all of the men’s costumes. Finding enough time to complete and fit the women’s costumes was definitely a challenge. I was also extremely lucky that I had sewing assistance from Shelley Wild, Denise Sproule and Dawn Vaughn. They saved my life!!
* What has come off brilliantly that you hoped would but secretly thought might not?
Helen and Cassandra’s dresses were definitely a challenge! The patterns we used were bought online and were not complete (to say the least!) it took some creative problem solving to get them stage ready! I’m really happy with the way they look on stage.
* Has there been a moment where you were doing something you thought you never would?
I never thought I would ever have to hand sew a pair of shoes to keep them together! Thrifting can be your best friend, but can also be your worst enemy when you find the perfect item, but is just a bit too broken to be useful... hence sewing Helen’s shoes together because the glue just wouldn’t stick!
* What do you love about The Trojan Women?
I think The Trojan Women is my favourite play text of all time. I’ve always loved the many MANY connections that you can make to the world today. The characters are all so multi layered and I especially love the intricacies that each translation brings to them. The one wish I have is that I could read Ancient Greek to be able to see where the translations have derived from and how they have arrived at the language choices they made.
* Why should audiences come see it?
When the world is being judged so harshly and women are starting to take charge of their futures and control of their pasts, the lens that this production is taking through the Me Too campaigns is so prevalent for any person today. The Trojan Women is a must see production for anyone interested and supportive of women’s rights. Even if you’re just a fan of classical theatre, you’ll love the way that Emily Wilson has translated the text for today’s theatrical viewpoints. Either way, it’s a brilliant play and needs to be seen!
That is the gorgeous & creative Mel and we are blown away by her magnificent creations that you get to see on-stage - truly stunning and the costumes set the tone for the piece brilliantly - come & see the show for yourself and see just what we mean!
This is a must-see production from the incredible team at Dionysus Theatre - and with just TWO SHOWS remaining, be sure to grab your tickets now!
May we introduce our incredibly talented sound technician, Kye.
It’s also his birthday today so in honour of that, go and check out his band, He Who Seeks Vengeance - frankly the perfect title of a band from someone who spends a decent amount of his time also cavorting with a Greek god...
